Defending your Home from a Tornado

April 24, 2019

If you live in a part of the world that is regularly buffeted by tornados, you’ll need to have a plan in place for when they come. It might seem a little crazy to do anything more than the most basic planning, but it can save your house and life if a larger twister bears down on you. First, you’ll need to knock out structure of your home. For a tornado, you need to get to the lowest part of the house, away from openings, and hunker down.

The lowest part of your house might be a basement, windowless bathroom, or closet, but you need to pick a room and then fortify it. Installing some tornado resistant doors will be a good start, so that when you close the door you know it will stay closed. Be sure to always keep some form of a tornado kit around as well.

You should have flashlights, a battery or hand operated radio, fresh batteries, food, water, and a first aid kit at the very minimum. Make sure this kit is either in the room or easily accessible on your way there, and take inventory of it every few months to ensure it stays up to date.

Finally, if tornado warnings and watches are in your area, take them seriously and take the time to monitor your local weather. If a tornado is in your area, keep monitoring the weather as you head to your safe room. It might be a case of better safe than sorry, or that preparedness could save your life.

If you’ve fortified your safe room and have a well-stocked kit, then you’ll be able to ensure that you can weather the storm and its aftermath. So take the preparation seriously and then you’ll be all the more ready when the bad weather comes.
